Just before the battle of Antietam the battle of South Mountain happened. Later seen as a skirmish at the time it was a huge victory for the northern army. My ancestor Joseph Vantilburg fought at that battle with the Ohio 12th. They captured many southern soldiers as they took the mountain top near Fox Gap, a kind of gorge. There were also Turner’s Gap and Crampton’s Gap.
The Civil War lasted 4 years and we in the USA are still struggling with the issues of that time, in my opinion. Other wars have lasted much longer and I just wonder what good will come of all this fighting. And while I believe there is a time and place to fight, I also believe that diplomacy is harder and messier that war. Compromise is still a dirty word.
